CAT Exam Guide: Eligibility, Exam Dates, Syllabus, Pattern & Preparation Tips
If you are planning to pursue an MBA / PGDM, understanding the Common Admission Test (CAT) is the essential first step. It is one of India’s most important entrance tests for management programs accepted by IIMs and many other leading business schools.
Whether you are looking for CAT exam eligibility, syllabus, exam pattern or preparation strategy tips, having the right information can help you plan your MBA journey with confidence.
This guide explains everything simply, so you can plan your next step with greater clarity.
The Common Admission Test (CAT) is a national-level, computer-based entrance exam conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) annually. It is a widely accepted management entrance exam used by the IIMs and many other reputed institutes for MBA and postgraduate management (PGDM) programs.
The CAT entrance exam evaluates your ability across three main sections: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) and Quantitative Aptitude (QA).
Together, these sections assess how well you can understand information, solve problems and make decisions within a time-bound environment.
The CAT exam date is announced every year through the official notification. The exam is usually held once a year, mostly in November. The registration process generally starts a few months before the test.

To appear for the exam, candidates must fulfil the CAT eligibility criteria specified by the conducting IIM. It is usually as follows:
There is no fixed CAT exam age limit. So, you can apply even if you have work experience or have taken a break after graduation.
Note that meeting the eligibility criteria only allows you to appear for the exam. Final admission depends on the B-school’s selection process. This may include your CAT score, academics, work experience, interview, written ability test and overall profile.
The CAT syllabus is divided into three main sections:

The CAT exam is considered one of the most competitive MBA entrance exams in India. This is mainly because it evaluates not only your conceptual knowledge but also your speed, accuracy, logical thinking and time management.
While the syllabus is manageable, the level of competition and the ability to perform under time constraints make the exam challenging.
Your success in CAT depends as much on your exam strategy as on preparation. You need to know which questions to attempt and which ones to leave. This is where regular mock tests help you build exam temperament by identifying weak areas, improving speed and accuracy and question-solving abilities.
A student who studies everything but does not analyse mocks may struggle in the actual test. So, you need to learn from your past mistakes and improve your question selection, as it can help you do much better over time.
This analysis is where real improvement happens.
